The Adventurers premiered at Gen Con Indy 2009 to great excitement. The tables were full with on-lookers throughout the four days of the show. Thanks to Frederic Henry, the designer of The Adventurers being on hand to demo the game, not only did players learn the game, they got insight into his design decisions. When Saturday came around and the game went on sale, there was already a line wrapping around the AEG booth, and the entire lot of 100 preview copies were sold within 1 hour and 15 minutes!

The Adventurers will next be seen at Internationale Spieltage in Essen, Germany in October 2009. Retailers at the Alliance Open House in Baltimore in October will also get a chance to play the game before it goes on sale to the general public later in the month.

This fall, Alderac Entertainment Group and Dust Games will release a new board game unlike any you’ve played before. The Adventurers and the Temple of Chac takes you into the lives of adventuring archaeologists, plunging into booby-trapped temples to secure relics of great importance and value. The game features beautifully sculpted figures and components, including a room of walls that converge and a giant boulder your heroes must avoid.

The Adventurers was the creation of Guillaume Blossier and Frédéric Henry. David Preti of Dust Games brought the concept game to AEG, seeking a partner with which to release the English version of the game. Upon playing through an early copy of the game, the staff at Alderac was immediately sold on the game.

“The game is very engrossing. You are instantly transported into this ancient temple, and the fast pace of the game helps to emulate the tension of the constant traps you face, “ says Todd Rowland, who represents AEG on The Adventurers. “I believe anyone who sees the game set up, with all the figures, walls, and tiles won’t be able to help but start playing.”

Guilllaume Blossier and Frederic Henry, the game’s designers add, “We started this project 4 years ago with the idea of gathering in the same game some of the most famous traps of “temple exploration” like those seen in movies. Our objective was to create a game in which players would compete against each other of course but also against the game itself through “traps mechanisms” working on their own. It took us a long time to adjust everything so that players could feel some tension all game long but now we just hope that players will be happy to become Adventurers for a while and experience the thrill of temple exploration thanks to this game !”

The Adventurers and the Temple of Chac will release this fall at game stores around the globe.

In the new game, The Adventurers and the Temple of Chac, you play a dauntless archaeologist exploring the dangerous Temple of Chac in the Guatemalan rain forest. But who was Chac?

Chac, also known as Chaac, Chaahk, Ah Hoya, Ah Tzenul, and Hopop Caan, among other names, was the Mayan god of rain. Chac carried an axe of lightning, which he would use to strike the clouds and create rainstorms and thunder.

Like many Mayan deities, Chac was a single entity but also had various aspects. Chac’s four aspects were based on the four cardinal directions. Farmers most often revered Chac, as his rain brought their livelihood. Many who worshipped Chac considered him to be a friend of mankind, benevolent and life giving. However, Chac was also known to be a war-like diety. Many ancient Mayan pictographs show the king of the time dressed as Chac, carrying many implements of war. The violence of a thunderstorm was likely the root of this tradition.

Chac himself was pictured as having a human body but with reptilian scales. He had a non-human head with fangs and a large nose. He was often pictured with a shield and his signature lightning axe. Chac was sometimes pictured with a frog, as it signaled the coming rain with its croaking.

Chac was associated with Kukulcan, the Mayan wind god, and some scholars debate whether Kukulan and Chac were one in the same.

Test your mettle against the traps protecting Chac’s temple in The Adventurers and the Temple of Chac, in game stores this October.
